Eden Girls’ School wins Slough Youth Parliament Democracy Award

We are delighted to have won the Slough Youth Parliament Democracy Award in recognition of our 100% voter turnout at the recent youth parliament ballot.

During September and early October, young people across the UK were encouraged to take part in the Make Your Mark ballot for 11 to 18 year olds. The annual youth parliament ballot gives young people the chance to vote on the major issues facing them others in their age group, with the topics receiving the most votes to be debated by the UK Youth Parliament in the House of Commons during November.

As a region, Slough achieved the highest voter turnout of all areas in the UK at this year’s Make Your Mark ballot. Additionally, Eden Girls’ School has been awarded the Slough Youth Parliament Democracy Award in recognition of all 394 of our pupils casting their votes.

Our Principal Karim Murcia said, “At Eden Girls’ School we encouraged all of our pupils to take part in the youth ballot, to have a say in the issues the UK Youth Parliament will debate on their behalf in the House of Commons. Our pupils are passionate about democracy and used the Make Your Mark youth ballot to make their voices heard.”

Eden Girls’ School pupil, Momina Naz, who is also a member of the Slough Youth Parliament, commented, “It makes me very proud that our school has been recognised for having a 100% turnout in the youth ballot. We care very much about the issues affecting young people and did not want to waste the opportunity to influence what the UK Youth Parliament will decide to take forward as their campaign for 2018.”

Over 950,000 young people nationally took part in the Make Your Mark ballot.  More information is available at www.ukyouthparliament.org.uk.
