Pupils celebrate outstanding GCSE results

Pupils at Eden Girls’ School, Slough are celebrating their GCSE results after facing more than a year of challenges to their education.

Pupils and staff from the school faced a difficult year as they worked through disruption caused by lockdown, periods of self-isolation and illness. Exams were cancelled this summer due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Exam boards issued qualifications based on grades determined by teachers following tests and assessments completed in school.

Despite these challenges, teachers say that pupils at the school obtained excellent results and displayed extraordinary commitment to their studies throughout the year.

Today, pupils are celebrating their achievements as they collect their results and take their next steps towards their careers of choice.

Hard work and determination paid off for top-performing pupils Areej Ahmed and Maryyam Farooq (pictured). Areej secured an outstanding set of GCSE results, including eight grade 9s making her one of the school’s highest performing pupils alongside Maryam, who achieved an impressive seven grade 9s. Areej will study A Levels in Maths, Chemistry, Psychology and Biology. Maryyam will study A Levels in Biology, English Literature and Chemistry.

Amongst the many delighted pupils were Eeshal Malik, Zainab Naeem, Safah Qureshi (pictured), Hera Tahiri and Maryam Asif Rana who all performed exceptionally well and were awarded grades 7 to 9 in all of their GCSE subjects. Hera achieved seven grade 9s with Eshal, Zainab, Safah and Maryam all achieved six grade 9s.

When Tayyaba Tayyaba joined Eden Girls’ School, Slough she was new to the country and spoke very little English. Teachers say she worked tirelessly to achieve a fantastic set of results and is a source of inspiration for both staff and pupils alike. Tayyaba will study A Levels in Sociology, Psychology and Law.

Pupil Sanaa Ali persevered to ensure long-term health issues did not stand in the way of her studies. Sana consistently impressed teachers with her resilience and positive approach to learning. Sanaa’s efforts to always catch up on work missed due to illness or medical appointments left her with a well-earned set of GCSE results. She will study A Levels in Business Studies, Psychology and Law.

Sajid Khaliq, Principal at Eden Girls’ School, Slough, praised pupils and staff for their incredible efforts during a difficult year. He said:

“Despite the disruption caused by the pandemic, our pupils have displayed an outstanding level of commitment and perseverance to continue to make remarkable progress with their studies.
